Pheona Donohoe of Australia, a drummer, DJ, student and all around wonder woman, has been saving one day of her pay per week to pay for a benefit to help the women of Juarez. She arranged for a showing of Senorita Extraviada, a sale of Tshirts, designed by artists and a concert. She raised a total of $5,500 Australian and sent the money to Amigos de las Mujeres de Juarez. With this money, we bought walkie talkies for a commnity watch group. These are for their safety. This group gets up very early in the morning and accompanies women to work in the neighborhood maquiladoras. They have been able to stop serveral potential abductions of young women. One member of this group is the mother of one of the femicide victims and most of them are housewives. In addition, $1000 US was earmarked for Casa Amiga, Centro de Crisis.
Special thanks to Pheona Donohoe, Artists Sarah Bowyer, Chantel Camilleri, Ruben Stanton and FLIQ for their wonderful tshirt designs. Thanks also to the musicians Clare Bowdich, Katie Noonan and Paul Grabowsky who performed at the concert. Also thanks to Fi Dalewood who designed the women of Juarez website.
Below are Las Leones with the walkie talkies donated by Pheona and
the other women of Australia.
